From Cleopatra’s carbon painted arched and elongated brows to the barely there look of the middle ages. The thin, extended lines of the twenties to the full, bushy brows of the eighties. Eyebrow trends have been continuously evolving and in 2017 the strong brow continues to reign supreme.
Products which can help create the illusion of a fuller brow are a godsend for anyone who lacks the appropriate amount of above-eye fur or who’s brows have simply thinned with age… (I’m putting my hand up at this point). EcoBrow Defining Wax (£23.00) is one such product which I’ve been putting to the test lately and I really like it.
Created in 2013 by Make-up Artist and eyebrow specialist Marco Ochoa, Ecobrow is a mineral based wax/gel hybrid.
The cream to powder formulation contains Nylon which gives a smooth creamy texture. Ecobrow also contains silica for oil absorption as well as nourishing Vitamin E. Free from parabens and Bismuth Oxychloride, it makes a great natural alternative to the Dipbrow Pomade from Anastasia Beverly Hills (a favourite in the industry).
Ochoa’s mantra is to DAB, FILL, BLEND and this principle works pretty well. I worked on that basis and after a little trial and error I work out that essentially a small angle brush (such as LY30) gets the best results; make sure you have no splaying hairs mind! Brush through your brows first with a brow brush and then work from the inside out. I focused on filling my brows rather than blending as I don’t favour the heavy, blocky filled brow look (look at the Ecobrow website to see what I mean) – each to their own however.
The colour went on easily and results were pretty instantaneous but one thing I learnt pretty quickly is that you only need a light very touch; too much product on the brush will result in super-heavy, over-drawn brows!! Remove excess product on the back of your hand or a tissue before you take the brush near the brow. It can be built up easily so don’t worry about under-doing it to begin with.
Available in six shades, all named after some pretty iconic women: Marilyn (Blonde); Rita (Auburn); Sharon (Light Brunette); Penelope (Brunette); Liz (Dark Bunette); Frida (Soft Black). I haven’t tried them all but those I have seem pretty accurate in terms of colour matching. Annoyingly I can’t find the swatch I made so above is a slightly dodgy picture of my brows adorned with Sharon.
I usually use powder product to define eyebrows but I think (this is tbc) that I am actually preferring the finish of the wax and can definitely see a place for Ecobrow in my kit in the not too distant future.
Have you tried Ecobrow yet?
