Review: The Brighton Beard Co – Creampot Tom’s Beard Balm

I thought I would share one of my favourite products from my Male Grooming kit today. In the course of my work I do a lot of male grooming which not only entails prepping and looking after their skin but also their facial hair and so beard balm has become a staple in my bag.

According to a survey last year (2023) by YouGov, the international online research data and analytics technology group, 54% of men now say they currently sport some form of facial hair (a rise from 42% in 2016 and 37% in 2011) with full growth now fully supplanting stubble as the top choice amongst men with facial hair.

For the past few years I’ve been using Creampot Tom’s Beard Balm (£22.00/£14.00) on the hairy faces that greet me in the makeup chair.

Creampot Tom’s is a rich conditioning treatment balm which is formulated to help to repair and prevent split ends whilst softening, nourishing the hair, leaving a light shine and providing a light hold to help tame any flyaway hairs.

It it super easy to apply; simply warm little in your hands and then work it though the beard. You don’t need much, maybe a pea-sized amount. Any excess just work though your head hair. You can then leave it at that or go over the beard with a natural bristle brush.

More often than not, I use this beard balm on whomever sits in front of me so obviously frequency of application from my perspective changes depending on the job however my husband uses it most days to keep his beard in check. I don’t think there is an exact science to it, whatever works for you.

The Brighton-based company was established in 2013 and the balms are handcrafted in small batches using 100% natural ingredients. Each balm is formulated using a base of shea butter, beeswax and jojoba oil and then blended with essential oils to create a range of beautifully scented beard taming products.

Available in six scents; ranging from citrus to woody or musky so there’s a Creampot Tom’s for everybody. I (or should I say my husband and my male grooming kit) have worked my way though all of them now I think and it’s a tough call as to which is my favourite.. possibly the YlangYlang and Sandalwood… or maybe the Sandalwood, Elemi and Lavender…hmmm.. the Mandarin and Cedarwood is very nice too..

I love a story behind a name and in this case the name, I’m sure you will agree, is strong. In their own words, the company looked to the beards of the sea as our muse. Each of the products are named after smugglers, moonshiners and villains from the East Sussex area. Other products include Jevington Jigg Beard & Moustache Wax and Old Joll’s Beard Oil and each has their own anecdote based on true stories. Creampot Tom’s goes as follows…

Creampot Tom was a lawless son of a gun, and the luckless buddy of Jevington Jigg. The pair stole a hoss one fine afternoon and that was the end of that. While his mate got shipped off to Aus, ol’ Creampot was sent to the gallows, the unfortunate sod. As it happens, his beard balm has plenty more luck and will keep your beard in order, stopping you from having a right ‘mare.

I also have the Jevington Jigg Beard & Moustache Wax in my kit but thats a story for another day…

Have you (or a beardy you know) tried this beard balm?
