K-Beauty (Korean Beauty) has been a thing for a while now but I wasn’t convinced there would be much out there in terms of natural and organic products.
I came across Whamisa Hydrogel Masks (£6.50) during a recent excursion to Planet Organic. Seeing the combination of Korean lettering and BHID organic certification on the front of the packets I was intrigued to find out more. Being a massive fan of face masks (although not so experienced in the sheet mask department) and having read (the incredibly small) print on the back of the packets, I knew I had to give them a whirl!
For those of you not in the know, a Hydrogel mask is a little like a sheet mask, however instead of having a piece of fabric on your face, you are applying a sheet of plant based gel which holds all of the goodness. The mask is biodegradable and will either dissolve in water immediately or degrade within one week so there is no waste.
There are three hydrogel masks in the range: Organic Fruits Hydrogel Mask (not pictured as it wasn’t in stock) contains apple, kiwi, banana and tomatoes which promote a clear and radiant complexion. Hazel Seed Oil balances sebum and leaves skin clearer and looking hydrated.
The Organic Flower Hydrogel Mask uses a floral blend of camellia sinensis extract (green tea), dandelion root, chrysanthemum and lotus flower extracts to brighten and soften the complexion. Being packed full of antioxidants, the mask also helps to protect from environmental damage. Organic Seeds Hydrogel Mask is designed to soothe and smooth the skin; improving elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Whilst the three masks are very different, they all have one thing in common; fermented organic ingredients. Korea is known for fermented delicacies and they aren’t averse to using it in their skincare too. Whamisa’s fermentation process is considerate to sensitive skin and so the masks are suitable for all skin types.
The mask is face shaped (for want of a better description) and comes in two parts (top and bottom) to make application easier. Once applied leave the mask on for around 20 minutes before discarding it. Massage any residue into the skin and follow with a moisturiser. I found there is a fair amount of excess juice in the packet and so I applied this by hand to my neck and décolletage – it works a treat!
It is recommend that the masks are used regularly 2-3 times per week (obviously you would need 2-3 masks as they are single use) or over 4 weeks as an intensive course. I have only tried the two masks – one either side of my holiday so I don’t have the benefit of experience when it comes to the outcome of this however one use of the mask left my skin glowing and radiant.
I have to admit wearing one of these is not the most flattering look. With the glasslike film over my face, looking in the mirror I felt a little like Bjork looked in her All Is Full of Love music video (Dir: Chris Cunningham, 1999) – maybe that was wishful thinking though…
I am totally sold on these masks and will definitely be investing in more of them (they also make a kelp mask which looks amazing), both for me and my pro kit – they would be perfect addition to skin prep on a beauty make-up or as a soothing, rehydrating treat for post SFX skin.
Have you tried these masks yet?
