As we discovered yesterday, products which cover your whole skin are the best ones to change first when you make the decision to go organic. By the same token, it is worth considering your hair products and today I’m talking shampoo.
One of the areas of the body where we apply most products is our hair. often considered as our crowning glory, it is also a very good indicator of our overall health and more importantly, that of our scalp.
The scalp is one of the most sensitive areas of the body however it can also be one of the areas of skin we treat most aggressively. Daily washing, styling and regular colouring and straightening can all play havoc on the hair and scalp and this can lead to irritating problems. One of the worst product offenders is shampoo.
Many believe (albeit wrongfully) that for a shampoo to be effective it needs to foam or lather up so many conventional shampoos contain foaming agents such as Sodium Laurel Sulfate and Cocamide DEA. These foaming agents can strip the scalp of its sebum (the protective oil produced by the glands at the base of the hair follicle) and this can lead to problems such as irritation, flakiness and over or under production of the oil or sebum.
Shampoos don’t actually need to foam at all in order to be effective and many organic shampoos work perfectly well with little or no foaming. These are just three of the fabulous natural and organic shampoos that are synthetic foaming agent free…
