Make The Change: Lip Balm

So many people who are obsessed with lip balm or more specifically vaseline. When I first started college I studied with a girl who must have got through a tin of the stuff a week! She was endlessly applying and reapplying it coating her lips with layer upon layer of the damn greasy stuff – Gahhhh!! Let’s talk lips.

Lip balm is one of the easiest products to swap when you are making the change to organics. Vaseline and most other conventional lip balms contain petroleum and other mineral oil derivative as their primary ingredients and although it may feel great at the time, that’s all it is. These ingredients can’t penetrate the skin and therefore don’t provide the nourishment and moisturise the delicate skin on the lips needs.

Before you pick up another tin or tube, try a stick of the good stuff. Here’s some of my  favourites…

If you like to keep things simple try…

Skin+Tonic Naked Lip Balm (£3.50)

The great thing about this particular lip balm is that it contains just three ingredients! Shea butter, beeswax and coconut oil. Simple. You don’t really need anything else in there. It is exactly what it says on the tin.

If you need something super healing then go for…

Odylique Organic Lip Silk (£5.50)

A nurturing blend of raw shea, beeswax and coconut provides intense care for lips. Calendula helps heal cracked lips whilst  sweet orange peel is a protecting antioxidant. A perfect balm for those who’s lips are a little worse for wear…

And if you simply must have your lip balm out of a tin then go for…

Neal’s Yard Remedies Bee Lovely Busy Bee Balm (£6.50)

Bee-utifully scented and luxuriously softening. This multipurpose balm is intensely nourishing packed with a  blend of organic cocoa butter and beeswax. It has a zesty citrus scent thanks to the organic Orange Essential Oil. Every sale helps raise money for bee lovely charities and projects too :)

Are you a Mineral oil addict?

If you fancy finding out more about lip balms (the good and the bad) then I thoroughly suggest investing a little time and reading The Lip Liberation blog.
